Meritorious Service Medal group of 4 to 35471 Private David Walter Large, 5th Infantry Labour Company - Northamptonshire Regt./ 85501 Private - 143rd Company - Labour Corps. MSM (Gallantry) - London Gazette 3rd July 1919 (France). See description.
The following is a copy of the account of the act for which No. 85501 Pte. D. W. Large, Labour Corps., was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal.
On Dec. 6th 1918, during the errection of the Tenhove-Berchen heavy girder bridge over the river Scheldt, Sergt. Watson of the 6th Siege Coy. R. M. R. E. was standing on a derrick untying some ropes when he slipped and fell from a height of 40 feet into the river.
No. 85501, Private D. W. Large without hesitation dived into the river to his rescue.
As the current was running strongly and there was every chance of both men being swept under the wreckage of the old bridge, his action was highly to be commended showing fearlessness and promptitude.
