Twice during an attack, when one of his guns was hit and an ammunition dump was set on fire, it was was due to his prompt actions that serious loss of life was averted and the rate of barrage fire maintained. Later, when another gun pit was hit, he succeeded in putting out the fire and saving a number of wounded men from being burnt to death.
He came from Beckenham, Kent.
