Particulars of meritorious service for which recommendation is made; -
Pilot Officer TRUMAN is the Flight Engineer in a most gallant Lancaster aircrew and has now completed his tour of operations, consisting of 30 and 2 third sorties and 176 hours operational flying, and has consistently shown the highest qualities of skill and devotion to duty.
He has participated in attacks on many of the most strongly defended targets
in GERMANY including COLOGNE, ESSIN, DUSSELDORF, FRANKFURT, STUTTGART and KARISRUHE.
His skill in the handling of the engines and in all the duties assigned to a Flight Engineer have proved of the greatest assistance to his Captain and the other members of the crew with whom he has completed a most successful tour.
On the night of March 15th 1944 when attacking STUTTGART, the aircraft was intercepted by an M.E. 410 which was damaged and probably destroyed by the guns of the aircraft, and the skill and co-operation of Pilot Officer TRUMAN helped materially in making the work of his Captain as easy as possible; and so probably destroying the enemy aircraft.
This Officer has at all times shown a fine offensive spirit and devotion to duty and for the successes he has achieved I strongly recommend him for an award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.
