British Empire Medal, 1939-45 type, to Henry Murray
Citation: Served during the Spring of 1943 as a greaser in the engine room of a ship sailing in a convoy when attacked by a German submarine. The ship was torpedoed and eventually abandoned. Murray and the Second Engineer Officer continued working in the engine room despite the danger of further enemy attack until it was obvious there was no hope of saving the ship. They displayed outstanding courage and devotion to duty and were amongst the last to leave the sinking vessel. Source: The London Gazette, 12th October 1943, Page 4488
