Born in 1878, the son of John Anderson, C.I.E., M.D., F.R.C.P., F.R.C.S. Educated at Horris Hill, Newbury: Winchester College (1892-1895) and Baptiste Scoones.

Married in 1910, Maude Coote, the daughter of William Morriston Davis. There were no children from the marriage.

Served in the South African War, 1900-1902, with the South African Light Horse, and as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomanry (entitled to the Queen's Medal with 5 clasps).

Employed from 1902 to 1916 in Uganda under the Foreign Office and subsequently the Colonial Office, holding administrative appointments and a Magistrate (1st Class), acting Sessions Judge, acting Provincial Commissioner, acting assistant Chief Secretary to the Government of the Uganda Protectorate and Chief Censor.

During the 1914-18 War, served as Captain (dated 12th July, 1917) and acting Major, 1st Battalion Middlesex Regiment, attached to the East African Forces from 1916 to 1918. On loan as Deputy Assistant Director of Transport, Belgian Military Authority. Took part in operations in the invasion of German East Africa as Brigade Signalling Officer with the Congo Carrier Section of the East African Transport Corps.

Twice mentioned in despatches; by Lieutenant General J.C. Smuts, Commander-in-Chief, East African Forces, dated 22nd November, 1916 (L.G. 8th February, 1917): and by the Governor of Uganda, dated 21st April, 1917 (L.G. 25th April, 1917).

Awarded the Military Cross "For valuable services rendered in connection with military operations in the field." (L.G. 4th May, 1917). This award was subsequently upgraded:

"The award of the Military Cross which was announced in the Gazette dated May 4th, 1917, to Captain R.D. Anderson, Congo Carrier Section, East African Transport Corps is cancelled; the award of the Distinguished Service Order being substituted." (London "Times" 26th June, 1918)

Awarded the Order of the British Empire (Military Division) "For valuable services rendered in connection with the war." (L.G. No. 3082, 1st January, 1919).

Further decorated by His Majesty the King of the Belgians, for distinguished service with the award of Orde de la Couronne (Officer). (L.G. 6th Feb., 1922)
