Service History: Served with 1st Hampshire Regiment, then transferred to the 11th Company Machine Gun Corps where he won the MM for actions in France, April-July 1917. After the war he worked as a platelayer on the Southern Railway. In 1939 he joined the Local Defence Volunteers (Home Guard) and rose to Sergeant in the 12th Southern Railway Battalion, Surrey Home Guard. Awarded the BEM for meritorious service in 1944.
